So, my cousins recently coerced me into trying out Blizzard's newest game, the MOBA for beginners of MOBA, Heroes of the Storm. Being a DoTA player for so long, I was hesitant to try a new game, but I figured it wouldn't hurt. So I re-downloaded the Battle.net Launcher I had deleted a while ago to make room for more games, and got started with this new game.
Now, I may not be a good player of DoTA 2, but I assumed that after playing it for so long, a MOBA considered noob-friendly would be simple for me. After 4 games against real players and bots, I was proven to be sorely mistaken.
Not very awe-inspiring |
A combination of lack of knowledge, restrictions on the heroes I could use, and high latency (a.k.a. The Dreaded Lag), I was, as quoted by the interviewers Gabby and Ty (who can get this reference?), "tossed up, flattened and rolled aside mercilessly". I was playing in a team of 5 consisting of me, my bro, my cousins + friend. Obviously, we were matched against other 5-man teams which had purchased heroes we had no access to. As a result, we faced total annihilation every time, even against bots.
One reason I like DoTA over other MOBAs is that all the heroes are instantly available unlike LoL where heroes must be unlocked to play permanently. This function in HoTS however, is unfortunately the same as LoL, making me a bit dissatisfied. Oh well.
The gameplay in HoTS is very different from DoTA as games can literally finish in less than 20 minutes. The matches are very fast paced and the game sports a few different maps unlike DoTA's single map which each have their own goals and objectives, making the game very varied but harder to pick up for a new player as they have to get used to every map and gamemode.
No individual levels here as the whole team levels together and kills are shared. Personally it makes me a bit sad to not know who killed which enemy, but I suppose it makes the game friendlier.
All in all, HoTS as a game is fundamentally very different from other MOBAs and it's a very interesting game. Obviously, I am terrible at it now, but I shall try to improve and perhaps start a series for this game as well. Drop some suggestions if you have experience in HoTS on what I can do to learn faster and I will see you all later ! :D
